Over the years, Filson's philosophy has never changed: Make sure it's the absolute bestClinton Filson spent a lot of time talking to his customers and refining his designs to their specifications. So it's not surprising that the items that worked then still work today, over 100 years since he started the company. Comfort, protection and durability never go out of style.

Filson has long been one of our favourite most versatile, rugged, and sought-after brands at Still Life. We've restocked in some of this winter's seasonal accessories ranging from Tin Cloth tote bags, duffle bags and umbrellas to heavy duty canvas and leather ruck sacks and briefcases, and classic Filson leather-bound flasks and Mackinaw Wool vests. Some of these items seriously flew off our shelves this past autumn/winter, so if you're feeling the press of the winter cold, swing by either shop and pick up some rugged Filson accessories.

Filson goods are still made and guaranteed in Seattle - available to take you through the winter at both Still Life For Him & For Her.

Last weekend Jordan & Kimmy spent some time with Erin Templeton at her Vancouver studio/storefront, bringing back a beautiful array of Erin's gorgeous, handmade, leather goods to take our ladies into autumn 2011. Still Life introduced Erin's unique leather bags to our Victoria friends last spring, and quickly sold through all of handmade purses, totes, bags and accessories. Moving into autumn 2011 we've pulled a larger variety (in style and colour) from Erin's studio, expanding the collection to include more Kiss & Makeup Bags, Leather Writers, Change Wallets (Medium & Large) and Card Cases. In addition to these accessories we have stunning colour options in Erin's classic TGIF Crossbody Bag, The Hobo Bag and The Tote (Small and Medium).

Born and raised in the mountains outside of Vancouver, British ColumbiaErin Templeton started making leather accessories in 1999, while studying shoemaking at Cordwainer's College in London, England. In 2002, she had the opportunity to rent the boiler room of Vancouver's Modernize Tailors, and then when the tailors relocated in the spring of 2007, the chance to open her own storefront/studio in their historic location came to be.

Erin has kept the traditions of the space alive, continuing to make products locally, by hand. All designs are lovingly made in-house, in either new or recycled leathers. Erin's life-long fascination with vintage informs designs that defy trends and transcend eras. Minimal hardware and simple, strong construction allow people to adjust, change, and make pieces their own. It is her hope that each piece is able to be a life long friend, and able to mix freely with new and vintage pieces.

filson - rugged quality for over 100 years. born in 1850, c. c. filson inherited his father's pioneer spirit and love of the outdoors. after homesteading in nebraska and roaming the country as a railroad conductor, he moved to the small city of seattle, washington in the 1890's. filson's timing couldn't have been better. by 1897, the great klondike gold rush was on, and thousands of fortune hunters were stampeding into seattle, headed north. armed with a strong work ethic, a reputation for honesty, and several years' experience operating a small loggers' outfitting store, c. c. filson was ready to stake his claim to fame.

in 1897, filson opened c.c. filson's pioneer alaska clothing and blanket manufacturers, specializing in goods to outfit the stampeders to the klondike gold rush. stories of harrowing experiences in the yukon were widely reported and it was for such terrible conditions that filson designed his goods. he owned his own mill and manufactured mackinaw clothing, mackinaw blankets and knit goods, as well as selling boots, shoes, moccasins and sleeping bags specially designed for the frigid north. filson kept in close contact with his customers, improving his goods to meet their specific needs. the stampeders depended on filson. in that era, clothing wasn't a matter of choice, but of survival.

even after the gold rush faded into history, filson continued to make his goods from the best materials obtainable, and guaranteed every piece of merchandise. filson's name became synonymous with reliability, satisfaction and honest values. by the 1960s, filson's reputation as the premier outfitter for outdoorsmen had spread around the globe. in addition to being stocked by retailers of quality outdoor wear, filson garments were being ordered by mail from places as far away as greenland.

over the years, filson's philosophy has never changed: make sure it's the absolute best. clinton filson spent a lot of time talking to his customers and refining his designs to their specifications. so it's not surprising that the items that worked then still work today, over 100 years later. comfort, protection and durability never go out of style. filson goods still made in the united states, and are now available at still life.

red flag design spring/summer 2011

May 13, 2011, 12:48 pm

red flag design was founded in 2004 by barnaby killam and stuart sproule, two vancouver designers joined by a desire to create functional products that emphasize process, quality, and craftsmanship. beginning from their original studio, an 800 square-foot shoebox with a view of the mountains, they fell into possession of some discarded materials that were bound for the landfill. included among them was a quantity of old sails. these became the source fabric for their first collection of totes and travel bags. since then, red flag design has expanded to include three full product ranges retaining their founding principle of manufacturing all RFD goods in-house.

repurposing materials is an important aspect of the red flag design approach to product design, but their philosophy has more to do with authenticity and history than sustainability. to us, fabrics that have previously lived a useful life have a story and character that cannot be replicated in new materials. this unique life of each material is the starting point for the designs. they’re interested in redefining the boundaries of high-end sewn goods, challenging consumers to reconsider what “recycled” means. they pride themselves on making the best recycled sailcloth products in the world. the product cycle plays an important role in the RFD philosophy. using obsolete or discarded materials, they are diverted from the landfill by repurposing them as new objects that end up in the hands of the original producer.

crafted from industrial materials, the heavy duty (hd) mark II collection is built to endure the toughest elements. rugged, resilient, and made to last, the line’s hallmark is long-term durability with a sleek and functional look. materials used in the hd mark II line are acquired from industrial sources or are salvaged locally. the main textile used in the collection is waterproof hypalon, a rubber-coated industrial fabric that’s scuff and chemical resistant. available only in black.

  • the hd_mark II original tote gives the iconic red flag tote design the hd treatment. perfect for daily life on the go, this unisex bag’s oversized main compartment is complemented by an inside zippered pocket for your valuables. made from super-resistanthypalon fabric, with hand-tied, sinnet rope handles that sling comfortably over your shoulder.
  • made from waterproof rip-stop nylon and protected by a waterproof zipper, the hd dopp kit is the ultimate, spill-protected travel case for your bathroom essentials. the kit, with its gusseted design, expands to carry all of your grooming basics and flat folds so it’s only as big as it needs to be.

the same qualities that make a sail effective on the water — strength, lightness, durability — make it a great source material for functional, long-lasting bags. the alternate use material (aum) sc collection repurposes sailcloth into unique, handcrafted carry goods. authentic red flag recycled sailcloth products are identified by the rfdwavemark’ label. handmade in small batches using limited materials, the pieces range in specific fabric types, colours, stitching and style while retaining traces of their nautical heritage. and since no two sails’ journeys are the same, each product has its own story to tell, as both a chronicle of voyages past and an accessory to future adventures.

  • the flagship design, a unisex classic, the sc original tote is an oversized day bag that fits all of your daily essentials and then some. made from authentic recycled sailcloth, with hand-tied sinnet handles, the original tote slings comfortably over your shoulder for easy carrying, no matter how heavy the load.
  • the lightweight sc single strap tote is a practical daily carrier for running errands around town. made from recycled sailcloth, this bag has a single sinnet handle which keeps its top closed while you carry it. a zippered interior pocket keeps your phone and wallet safe from the elements.

the alternate use material (aum) canvas collection is inspired by the rich, utilitarian history of vintage military fabrics. the primary source material is military tent canvas, a tough, durable fabric that has softened and become modeled over time. also incorporating other types of surplus military fabric into the line, along with reclaimed leather details. true to its military heritage, the aum canvas line is mainly classic olive in colour.

  • the aum canvas shelter bag is a city girl’s best friend. it carries all of your daily essentials, which are kept safe with a drawstring closure and leather button clasp. exterior front pocket provides quick access to your phone and keys. strap changes from double to single, so you can carry it at two different heights.
  • on a sailboat, hanks are used to secure the foresail to the rigging. the new hank keychain reincarnates the traditional sailing clip as a super-secure key carrier. made of cast bronze, with brass name tag, laser cut hypalon key and black enamel split ring. eachhank is hand cleaned and buffed, keeping the original patina intact.

fjällräven autumn/winter 2010

straight backs are happy backs, as such the fjällräven kånken backpack was launched in 1978 to spare the backs of swedish school children. back problems had begun to appear in increasingly younger age groups and shoulder bags were popular across the european nation. with many simple, clear functions, the kånken soon became a common sight at pre-schools and nature schools around sweden. the idea of using a backpack quickly spread, as did the kånken and it is just as popular today being and an excellent choice for school, outings or biking to work. made out of durable, lightweight vinylon f the kånken has a large main compartment with a large opening makes it easy to put in/take out items, two side pockets and a zippered pocket in the front, handle at the top, narrow, supple shoulder straps, sitting pad in the pocket in the back and the fjällräven artic fox logo that doubles as a reflector.

we've watched as these ultra-practical swedish bags have been snapped up by all types of folks downtown at still life boutiqe - from young kids heading to their first day of school and university friends finally heading (back) to school to downtown commuters for work and outdoor explorers. last weekend during rifflandia jordan got caught in a torrential downpour with tommy guerrero and our friend aaron from the sentimentals and stored all his camera gear & recording equipment in his burnt red kånken and everything came out dry as it went in. we're especially excited with this delivery of the bags to see the very first arrival of both the black and purple kånkens (two colours we've never before had instore).

the fjällräven kånken backpacks amazing, practical, colourful, and now available at still life boutique.
